In this mini article, we'll discuss a dedicated list of 4 different types of flooring you can select for your garden... and if your garden is big enough, why not include them all!? 1. Wooden Decking

Decking is a wonderful component of any garden, as it is the main entertainment area where friends and family can gather around and enjoy - regardless of the weather! How to Lay Artificial Grass

Do you have an untidy garden and no time to sort it out? We have a one-time option for you that will not only save a lot of time but also hassle in maintenance over next few years: artificial grass! An alternative to grass, that is not only budget-friendly but can also add a taste of class to the exterior of your humble abode...

Here is a 5-minute, DIY step-by-step guide on how to lay artificial grass, so that whether you're a novice or a pro, you can ensure a superb finish:

1. Digging out your Dimensions.

Start by clearing the weeds and digging out approximately 10cm of your soil. This ensures the artificial grass won't look unnaturally tall over paving or decking. This process is incredibly important to get right and is one that will require patience and precision.

2. Sub-Base.

A sub-base underneath the artificial grass will allow water to seep through, reducing the possibility of flooding. This will also prevent the grass from sinking into the soil, as it has a foundation to ensure it remains both levelled and supported. Your foundations are always what you build from, and a solid, well-considered foundation will provide you with the basis for success!

3. Levelling Using Sand (Optional).

Whilst optional, you could consider scattering a layer of sand underneath the grass to level this out a little more. However, this should already be reasonably level, due to the sub-base causing this step to be optional.

4. Weed Membrane.

Place the weed membrane sheets over the sub-base to reduce the likelihood of weeds growing through the grass, eliminating the chance of penetrating the plastic, and needing it to be replaced.

5. Roll out the Artificial Lawn.

Roll out the artificial lawn towards the main viewpoint to stop the lawn from looking unnatural.

6. Trim and Tidy.

Trim back the overlapped edges with a Stanley knife, simply by running the knife along the stitch lines not through them (to not ruin the grass). Cut through the Latex cloth and not the grass itself.

7. Remove the stitches.

After removing the stitches, apply an adhesive using a cartridge gun onto the joint in a zigzag motion to keep this securely in place. Hold the grass back and apply slight pressure to smother the product across the entirety of the join. Do this carefully, making sure the glue does not go onto the grass as this could ruin it. Brush the edges of the joint to hide them from plain view.

8. Pin the grass down.

With the use of a hammer, slowly hit the pins into place, leaving a space of approximately 20-30cm from each to secure the corners properly.

9. Sweep the grass.

Make sure to get rid of any dust or dirt on the grass once it has fully dried before scattering silica sand onto the grass and filling in the piles. Once you have applied generously, leave to dry for roughly 2 hours. Once this has dried, your grass is ready for use! Now time to decorate with that, all-important garden furniture!

How to Lay Turf

Looking to transform your garden during Autumn? Look no further, in this blog, we'll be discussing how to lay your own turf from scratch. We have compiled a 'how to', step-by-step guide to ensure that even a novice DIY'er, can complete this with minimal stress or difficulty! Follow along and let us know on Facebook how you got on!:

1. Turn Over Your Soil.

Whilst clearing the area in which the grass will be rolled out, ensure the soil is sufficiently turned over, by raking the space from corner to corner Whilst doing so, you can pull out all of the weeds (make sure you do so by their roots) to neaten up the area and increase the lifetime of the turf you're about to lay.

2. Laying the Turf.

Start by laying the rolls of turf widthways, tightly aligning each strip against the next. Don't worry if the grass overlaps your measurements, as it can be cut back to the required dimensions. Whilst rolling the grass out, press carefully onto it without squishing the turf. When moving onto the next strip, if you need to stand on the fitted turf rest a plank underneath yourself as this will stop any unwanted dents and holes within your grass.

3. Whilst laying the turf.

Push the turf out to the edges for a tight join, but be careful to not overstretch this turf to avoid rips and any potential damage.

4. Finishing touches.

Next, you want to trim the edges of the overlapped grass whilst using a plank (to avoid denting or creating a hole in your newly laid grass). Finishing touches matter, so have patience!

5. Maintaining your newly laid grass.

Newly laid grass requires regular watering, there must be enough water t reaches the soil without causing a mini flood of wet mud! You may not have to water your grass as regularly as expected with all of this Autumnal rain, but where there is windy or drier weather conditions, you will have to water the soil manually. Water your turf around to 2-3 times a day or if you see the grass beginning to shrink or dry out. If there are any holes, fill them in with soil and seed.

Top Tip: Consider purchasing an automated sprinkler to avoid the risk of over-dried grass!

How To Grout a Tiled Room in 2023 - Improve Your DIY Knowledge!

Grouting can save you a lot of money, by substituting funds with 3-4 hours of your own time! Grouting is the final phase of installing a tiled wall or floor after the adhesive has fully activated. Grouting is not incredibly difficult to complete to a high/acceptable standard, but can go very wrong if the process isn't followed correctly! This is why we've created this 5-minute blog post, to not only help save you time but to explain the steps needed to grout like a pro!

What Are the Types of Grout?

Grout comes in either a premixed or powdered form, and is either sanded or a non-sanded type. Selecting the correct grout for the type of tile you have is paramount in ensuring no complications arise!

Powdered grout must be mixed with water before use. Premixed grout comes in tubs and is convenient for smaller jobs. A non-sanded grout is suitable for grout joints up to 1/8 inch wide. Sanded grout is best for joints over 1/8 inch wide - however, this material is a little more difficult to work with in comparison to non-sanded grout, but is much stronger and helps to prevent cracking in wide joints.

Before Mixing the Grout

Make sure your tiles are prepared. This means ensuring the adhesive has set and there aren't any spacers left in between the tiles.

What You'll Need

Equipment:

Grout Sponge.
Rubber Grout Float.
Cloth (to wipe excess grout).
Plastic Bucket (take the bathroom size into account).

Materials:

Grout
Water

Mix the Grout

Mix the powder with water in a plastic bucket. Add little splashes of water at a time so your grout doesn't become too liquidated. Keep repeating this process until you achieve a toothpaste-like consistency. If grout's consistency looks overly liquid, add some more powder and this should even it out.

Apply the Grout

Whilst applying the grout, do not cover the whole float, as you are only filling in little sections at a time to ensure the right amount of grout is left within the gaps. Work from bottom to top and brush whilst adding slight pressure to fill in the holes. Reload the float after completing a small section and repeat.

Getting the Sponge to Use

After 20 minutes the grout should have mostly dried, and at a stage it should still wipe off with little effort. Use this to your advantage and clean the tiles to wipe down any excess, smoothening out the grout by brushing very gently across the gaps. Use hot water to make it even easier for yourself! A word of caution: leaving the grout to dry for a long period of time will cause you great difficulty in scraping off any excess. The key is to leave it long enough to slightly harden, but not too long for it to completely dry .

Finishing Touch

Brush your finger across the grout to mould it into the gaps and there you have it - you've now grouted your first room! Anything is possible if you dedicate time into learning something new, and then step out of your comfort zone to apply these skills!

When was the last time you thought to look at the condition of your exterior fittings around your property? Within this 5 minute guide, we’ll discuss the tell tale signs to look out for and where to turn should you need assistance.

1. Drooping Gutters

If your gutters are still pushing away from your facias or appear to be bowing, this could be a key indicator that maintenance is required. Whilst it may not, in itself be necessary to replace the entirety of the fixture, this is all be dependant on the sizing of the gutters as well as the support provided from the gutter hangers. These could either be spaced too far apart, be missing or begin to loosen over time.

So primarily, you need to consider whether you want a Gas or Electric Pressure Washer. Gas pressure washers generally provide more pressure and gallons of water per minute than the electric version. Gas-powered washers are also cordless and so clean faster and effectively.

In saying this, Electric washers are more environmentally friendly ensuring zero emissions, allowing you to use this system indoors with no need for stoppages to perform maintenance on the device.

What Size Should I chose?

The size of the pressure washer (as expected) will impact the the pressure and the gallon-per-minute outlet. As such you should consider whether you need a light-duty, medium-duty, heavy-duty and professional washers.

For the purpose of simplification and DIY attitude, we will break down the first 3.

Light-Duty washers produce under 2000 PSI pressure. This essentially means that if you're looking to cover a small patio or decking area, this type is perfectly sufficient.

Medium Pressure washers are better suited to washing the side of your home and a larger driveway. This level of pressure washer will ensure PSI between 2000 and 2800, creating a more powerful, more thorough wash.

Heavy-duty pressure washers operate with pressure levels between 2,900 and 3,300 PSI. Cleaning large areas of concrete or a the second story of a house, this is the type of machinery that you're looking for.

What about the nozzle?

Who would have thought that a nozzle could have so many different variants? The reason being, a nozzle determines the water steams' angle. The angle affects the outcome - a narrow angle has more power than a large-angle spray.

However, today you're in luck because we have the universal colour code guide to ensure you find a nozzle that's fit for purpose.

Red Nozzles have the narrowest angle (zero degrees). This produces a stream of water that packs a punch, so be careful. Don’t use a red-tipped nozzle too close to any surface.

Yellow Nozzles spray at a 15-degree angle. This is perfect for washing concrete.

Green Nozzles produce a spray with a 25 degree angle. This works perfectly for general household pressure washing. This can be used on your car or to remove mildew from patio furniture.

White Tips produce a 40-degree angle of spray. This is to be used on the exterior of your home and is specific to windows, siding and more delicate parts of your home.

Finally, we have Black Nozzles. These nozzles are the gentlest and are so light that typically it is unsuitable for cleaning away stains and dirt. Realistically these are best suited to simply wetting a surface.

So how do you pressure wash?

This is going to be a messy job and potentially quite dangerous if carried out incorrectly. A few tips we have to offer include the following.

Ensure sufficient protection including eye and hearing equipment. Pressure washers are not only loud but the flying debris, stones and dirt are bound to fly in the direction of your eyes.

Be sure to use both hands until you gain confidence. One on the handle of the wand, the other firmly on the tube.

When you are pressure washing, it's important to keep the nozzle at a safe distance to the surface that is being treated. We recommend keeping this approximately half a metre away.

Consider the environment that you are washing. Certain surfaces may pose more risk to your health and therefore unsuitable for you to tackle alone. For example, paints before 1978 may contain lead, which would be extremely hazardous if accidentally ingested by yourself, family and pets.
